Why not join our wonderful team of volunteers?

We have become short of front of house volunteers at Dunwich Museum since Covid hit, and  we are keen to attract and welcome new people to our team.

The front of house role involves some meeting and greeting, minding the museum whilst open, taking money for shop sales, both contactless and cash, and opening or closing the museum. Full instructions and backup are given and we have a comprehensive handbook. Volunteers do not have to be experts on Dunwich, as the displays and film tell the story.  It is fun, however, for those who do enjoy telling a dramatic tale and watching visitor's engage as they realise the magnitude of the loss here, but it is not at all essential.

Our volunteers mostly offer 2 sessions a month. One session is also appreciated.  Sessions are, opening from 11.30 until 2pm or from 2 until closing at 4.30. The museum attracts over 20,000 visitors in a normal year, fewer at the moment. We are maintaining social distancing measures and we have had no issues with this. We are seasonal, opening daily 11.30 -4.30,  from April to October, with some shorter sessions over the Xmas period and February half term.

As the world copes with climate change, we feel we have a more important story than ever, showing the massive consequences weather events and connected coastal change can bring to a community and a local economy. We also play a role in supporting the special environment of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Visitors generally enjoy the museum and one can bask in a bit of reflected praise!

If you think you might be able to spare a little time, do contact me to chat and look around. It is a great small but lively museum with a unique story that resonates today. Volunteers are essential to the life of the museum, both front of house and behind the scenes. You would be joining a team with many strengths, which we celebrate with occasional social events.

Kind regards

Jane Hamilton
