Volunteering at Dunwich Museum

Join our friendly team at the museum and help us keep the unique story of Dunwich, the city lost at sea, alive. Volunteers are essential to the life of the museum, both front of house and behind the scenes.

Current vacancies

We are recruiting new volunteers for the museum and in particular to our Front of House team. As a Front of House volunteer you will be:

  • meeting and greeting our visitors – we have c20,000 visitors each year!
  • sharing stories about Dunwich past and present
  • minding the museum whilst open
  • taking money for shop sales, both contactless and cash
  • opening and / or closing the museum

What training and support is provided?

No prior knowledge or experience is required but this role would suit someone who enjoys interacting with people and has an interest in local history. Full instructions and support are given and we have a comprehensive handbook you can refer to. Volunteers do not have to be experts on Dunwich, as the displays and film tell the story.  It is fun, however, for those who do enjoy telling a dramatic tale and watching visitor's engage as they realise the magnitude of the loss here, but it is not at all essential.

How much time is needed?

The museum is seasonal, open from April – October each year with some shorter sessions over the Xmas period and February half term. During the season we are open from 11.30am – 4.30pm. This day is split into 2 sessions:

  • 11.30am - 2pm
  • 2pm - 4.30pm

Most of our volunteers offer 2 sessions per month but if you would like to offer just one session that would be fine too.

A small museum with an international relevance

As the world copes with climate change, we feel we have a more important story than ever, showing the massive consequences weather events and connected coastal change can bring to a community and a local economy. We also play a role in supporting the special environment of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Visitors generally enjoy the museum and one can bask in a bit of reflected praise!

Get in touch

If you think you might be able to spare a little time, do contact me to chat and look around. It is a great small but lively museum with a unique story that resonates today. You would be joining a team with many strengths, which we celebrate with team social events.

Kind regards
