Discover geology in the walls of Greyfriars, the Leper Chapel, and St James's Church.

A Geological Society of Norfolk event for GeoWeek2023 with Dr Ruth Siddall and Tim Holt-Wilson in partnership with Dunwich Museum.

The old walls of Dunwich are rich in local flint and exotic stone types, imported by sea or casually arriving as glacial boulders and ship's ballast.

This day event will include an introduction to the geology of rock types - exotic and local - followed by an outing to look at the walls.

October 2021 - Autumn Activities

We walked through Greyfriars Woods to learn about the variety of plants and wildlife to be found in Dunwich in autumn. We collected leaves, seeds, feathers and chestnuts to make wreaths and other crafts. We also spotted a variety of fungi growing. Thinking about harvest time, we were shown some antique farming tools such as scythes, sickles, pitch forks and seed drills, and had a go at using them ourselves!
